about

Several decades ago, long before the current batch of "Rupert Hipsters" had squirreled their once prized massive CD collections away and re-mortgaged their houses to replace them with trendy vinyl, a teenage lad in a little town in Germany was foregoing normal German pop culture and was immersing himself in the delights of all manner of anglophile indie music and exuding a genuine cool that is exclusive to those that never really had the need for the latest fad.

Seb Voss, now all grown up, has maintained his natural sense of cool with his prolific The Fisherman and His Soul solo recording bedroom-pop project, which draws heavily on all of the influences he was surrounded by as a lad while still managing to draw on his inner sense of obtuse to add all the right shades of peculiar.

Collaborating once more with the Subjangle label, who released the critically acclaimed Nothing Ever Stays The Same album that was released in August 2021, to release this compilation of all his more jangle-pop, or at least jangle-pop adjacent moments, from an extensive back catalogue that he has released over the last five years.

As such, the album commences with the C86 fuzz adorned Santa's Bat (featuring labelmates The Radio Field), which drives forward with an incessant hum and a fey sense of pop that is reminiscent of the recent The Photocopies output. While the jangle-synth mix of The Flock of Seagulls' reminiscent Perfect Bathrooms and The Pet Shop Boys' strains of Spark on Boxing Day (feat. Ed Ling) are notable outliers, the majority of the album has far more concerted jangle-pop inferences.

From the jangly post-punk style of Cleaners From Venus' "A White Actor" (These Walls Have Ears) and "Just Because" to the The Wedding Present-inspired "Bravado (a new previously unreleased version) and Reckenfeld (feat. Estella Rosa & Tennant From Zero) this album should appeal to all jangly indie-pop fans.

However, the very best of the release is heard in French Cars, The Last Wasp of the Year, Dimmish Grey Sky and The Design of Coasts. Such tracks are augmented by the perfect imperfections of Voss' vocals. Such tracks provide the ideal setting for Voss' dark, rich, slightly theatrical Matt Johnson (The The) style baritone vocals that dart between the musical crevices.

You never know where this artist will end up. Albanian Techno, Post-Punk, Synth-Pop, and Disco are all within the realms of possibility for such an eclectic act! Thankfully, after his more obtuse sojourns, he always seems to return to the jangle-adjacent sounds of his youth, and this superb compilation gathers all the best of these "returns" so far!
