The Fisherman & His Soul - Nothing Ever Stays The Same
(A forward by Ernest Espresso)

Where is home? What does “home” even mean? Is it build out of nostalgia? An excluding and therefore dangerous concept? Or is home the kind of comfort zone one’s always seeking for?

The Fisherman & His Soul – the musical vehicle of German Indie-Pop maestro Sebastian Voss (he also is part of the duo Nah…) – is looking for answers on its new album “Nothing Ever Stays The Same”. Voss developed the LP in the spell of a time when relations struggled, and changes became cemented. The clue of these songs is obvious: No one can avoid changes. No one shall deny them. These songs give impulses to embrace them.

Together with a growing group of companions from all over Europe, Voss created a unique indie pop world, where pop and drama come together in a very special way. He contacted very old friends he worked with for years to write lyrics, asked artists he loves by himself to contribute as co-singers, mixers, or remixers.

The result is a LP that combines the old with the new. There are two atmospheric songs about places Voss grew up as a kid (“Harenberg”, “Reckenfeld”), but there’s also the spy-themed kitchen drama “The Dean” (the first single) where a woman does what needs to be done when the man is behaving in a very odd way.

Second single, the highly infectious indie-dance-pop-mash-up “Dimished Grey Sky”, shows a world where trust and banality are the real currencies of timeless love, while the New Order-ish “Perfect Bathrooms” reflects on the melancholy that enters a room when someone’s dressing up for a very special occasion – only to know that the night will end as lonely as the many nights before.

“Home for me are places and persons, but also records”, says Sebastian Voss. Records like “Seamonsters” from The Wedding Present, a record he loved since forever. His cover of the opening track “Dalliance” is a both, a tribute to the masterful craftmanship of David Gedge but also a love letter to a time, when music meant everything. “Music still means everything”, reflects Sebastian Voss, “but it’s important to remind ourselves to give music the space it deserves.”

“Nothing Ever Stays The Same” is a reminder of the ability of music to shape eras, to build places, to form friendships, to fall in love – and, yes, to make you feel at home.
